How Long Do LASIK Eye Surgery Results Last?

When you think about it, the LASIK procedure is truly incredible. In an average of about 30 minutes, the procedure reshapes your cornea and corrects your vision. However, what about the results? How long do LASIK eye surgery results last?

Results That Last

Thanks to technological improvements and increasingly skilled surgeons, LASIK results are considered both consistent and permanent. Even though there may be some cases in which patients need additional eye treatment, vision correction is usually not necessary after completing LASIK eye surgery. However, LASIK eye surgery does not usually correct the need for reading glasses. Just like having minor prescription changes over time, you may have minor changes in your vision after LASIK eye surgery. For this reason, reading glasses may be needed in later years as eyes change with age.

The need for an enhancement (or “touch up”) procedure after LASIK surgery can be necessary given the previously mentioned eye changes. Hormonal changes can also cause the need for vision correction. Obviously, changes in eyes and hormonal variations cannot be prevented. However, the need for enhancements can be reduced by choosing a highly skilled surgeon, using the latest technology.

That’s Where We Come In.

At Eye LASIK Midland, we value your vision just like you do. We feature the latest in technology and a group of highly skilled surgeons that your own eye doctor can refer you to. Different Types of Laser Eye Surgery

Different Types of Laser Eye Surgery

If you’ve ever considered laser eye surgery to improve your vision, you’ve probably come across the several different types, LASIK, PRK, LASEK, and dpi-LASIK. But what are the differences and how should you choose? Let’s discuss the different types of laser eye surgery.

Different Types Of Laser Eye Surgery

LASIK-LASIK is the most popular laser eye surgery. During LASIK, a “flap” is crated on the surface of the eye using a laser surgical tool. The “flap” is then folded back and the corneal tissue is reshaped. After reshaping, the “flap” is returned to the original position and becomes a sort of natural bandage, allowing the eye to heal. There are no stitches to reattach the “flap,” as it heals quickly and adheres securely.

PRK-In a PRK procedure, there is no “flap” created. A surgeon will entirely removed the outer layer of the cornea. The corneal tissue is then reshaped with a excimer laser. A new outer layer grows back within five days after the procedure.

LASEK-The LASEK procedure involves elements of both LASIK and PRK. Instead of discarding the outer layer of the cornea (like in PRK), the “flap” is pushed to the side, but remains attached to the eye on one side. This process exposes the corneal tissue for laser reshaping. After reshaping, the outer layer is repositioned and a bandage contact lens is placed on the eye to keep the layer in place during the healing process.

Epi-LASIK-Epi-LASIK is very similar to LASEK, with the only real difference being the type of tool used to loosen the outer layer of the cornea. This eliminates the risk of a reaction from the use of alcohol (used in LASEK).

There ya go, a quick and relatively simple explanation of each of the different types of laser eye surgery. All of the different types of laser eye surgery have high success rates, with similar vision outcomes. After a thorough consultation, our specialists will be able to determine which laser eye surgery is right for you, based on your individual needs. Request one today!

What To Expect After LASIK Surgery

What To Expect After LASIK Surgery

You’re considering LASIK surgery, but you’re curious about what to expect after LASIK surgery? After all, LASIK is a surgery and some hesitation/curiosity is to be expected! We’ll look into exactly what to expect after LASIK Surgery.

During The Surgery

To conduct the surgery, your LASIK surgeon will most likely put you under local anesthesia in the form of eye drops. However, some patients may require mild sedation. Anesthesia options should be discussed with your doctor. The surgery itself usually takes about 10 minutes to complete. After surgery, you should plan to have someone drive you home.

What Should I Expect After LASIK Surgery?

Most patients report that their eyes felt fairly normal the day after surgery. However, every patient is different. Your doctor will likely give your protective eyewear that you will be required to wear while sleeping.

What should you expect after LASIK surgery?

Usually, you don’t have to wear the eyewear longer than about a week. Your doctor will give you prescription eye drops to prevent infection and inflammation and eye drops to keep your eyes moist. Even though they may not feel dry, your eyes will be dry and will require the eye drops. These drops may cause a momentary slight burn or blurring of your vision, which is to be expected. Do not use any eye drops not approved by your eye doctor.

Healing after LASIK surgery usually occurs very rapidly, as the eyes are one of the fastest repaired parts of the human body. After LASIK surgery, your eyes may be red and watery. These normal symptoms are just part of the healing process. However, you may feel the urge to rub your eyes, like they’re irritated. Resist rubbing your eyes, and use the eye drops given to you by your doctor. Your vision may be blurry and hazy for the first day, but most patients notice improved vision within a few days of surgery. Some patients even experience improved vision immediately after LASIK surgery.

Specific follow-up appointments after your LASIK surgery varies from one surgeon to another. Typically, you will revisit the doctor for an evaluation 24 to 48 hours after surgery, as well as at regular intervals within the first six months. Most patients can return to work the next day or within a few days. Slight discomfort, sensitivity to light and eye dryness are common healing affects after LASIK surgery. However, if you think you are having any issues, it is important to call your doctor to see if further care is required.
