Protect Your Vision
Your eyes are one of the most important parts of your body, through which you see your life. Unfortunately, most people don’t truly appreciate vision until it’s gone. Let’s discuss some ways you can improve and protect your overall vision.
Tips For Eye Health:
- Eggs-Eating whole eggs (yolks too!) increases the levels of lutein and zeaxanthin in your body, which contribute to eye health. Eating 2 eggs daily significantly raises the levels of zeaxanthin and lutein without raising LDL cholesterol levels. Scramble your eggs with some spinach for an extra vitamin boost!
- Antioxidants-Higher levels of antioxidants have shown to decrease the chance for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The antioxidants protect your eyes by working to eliminate free radicals, compounds that damage cells by eliminating their oxygen supply. The nutrients previously discussed, zeaxanthin and lutein, can be found in dark leafy greens such as kale and spinach. These nutrients, along with vitamins C and E, help to form a macular pigment that filters dangerous rays from the sun.
- Seafood-Studies have shown that people who eat at least two servings of fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, trout) are one-third less likely to develop age-related macular degeneration. The fatty acids found in fish are key components of the nerve cells in the retina of the eye. The zinc from shellfish, crab and oysters has also been shown to help prevent AMD.
- Blood Pressure/Weight-Increased blood pressure damages blood vessels and increases the chance for developing AMD. The damaged blood vessels hinder blood flow to the eyes, prohibiting protective nutrients from reaching the retina. Losing extra weight may also help, given that excess fat tissue can act as a “sink” for some eye-protective nutrients.
- Supplements-While it is always best to get vitamins and nutrients from food first, you may consider taking a supplement if you have any risk for AMD. Your eye doctor can recommend an eye care supplement, containing lutein, zeaxanthin, EPA, and DHA. Even though supplements can be found over the counter, it is important to take it with caution and direction.
Healthy Eyes & Clear Vision
These 5 tips will not only help overall eye health, but also prevention of age-related macular degeneration. Vision is something that should be cherished and valued, so taking care of your eyes should be a priority for people of all ages.
