If you’ve ever considered laser eye surgery to improve your vision, you’ve probably come across the several different types, LASIK, PRK, LASEK, and dpi-LASIK. But what are the differences and how should you choose? Let’s discuss the different types of laser eye surgery.
Different Types Of Laser Eye Surgery
LASIK-LASIK is the most popular laser eye surgery. During LASIK, a “flap” is crated on the surface of the eye using a laser surgical tool. The “flap” is then folded back and the corneal tissue is reshaped. After reshaping, the “flap” is returned to the original position and becomes a sort of natural bandage, allowing the eye to heal. There are no stitches to reattach the “flap,” as it heals quickly and adheres securely.
PRK-In a PRK procedure, there is no “flap” created. A surgeon will entirely removed the outer layer of the cornea. The corneal tissue is then reshaped with a excimer laser. A new outer layer grows back within five days after the procedure.

LASEK-The LASEK procedure involves elements of both LASIK and PRK. Instead of discarding the outer layer of the cornea (like in PRK), the “flap” is pushed to the side, but remains attached to the eye on one side. This process exposes the corneal tissue for laser reshaping. After reshaping, the outer layer is repositioned and a bandage contact lens is placed on the eye to keep the layer in place during the healing process.
Epi-LASIK-Epi-LASIK is very similar to LASEK, with the only real difference being the type of tool used to loosen the outer layer of the cornea. This eliminates the risk of a reaction from the use of alcohol (used in LASEK).
There ya go, a quick and relatively simple explanation of each of the different types of laser eye surgery. All of the different types of laser eye surgery have high success rates, with similar vision outcomes. You’re considering LASIK surgery, but you’re curious about what to expect after LASIK surgery? After all, LASIK is a surgery and some hesitation/curiosity is to be expected! We’ll look into exactly what to expect after LASIK Surgery.
During The Surgery
To conduct the surgery, your LASIK surgeon will most likely put you under local anesthesia in the form of eye drops. However, some patients may require mild sedation. Anesthesia options should be discussed with your doctor. The surgery itself usually takes about 10 minutes to complete. After surgery, you should plan to have someone drive you home.
What Should I Expect After LASIK Surgery?
Most patients report that their eyes felt fairly normal the day after surgery. However, every patient is different. Your doctor will likely give your protective eyewear that you will be required to wear while sleeping.

What should you expect after LASIK surgery?
Usually, you don’t have to wear the eyewear longer than about a week. Your doctor will give you prescription eye drops to prevent infection and inflammation and eye drops to keep your eyes moist. Even though they may not feel dry, your eyes will be dry and will require the eye drops. These drops may cause a momentary slight burn or blurring of your vision, which is to be expected. Do not use any eye drops not approved by your eye doctor.
Healing after LASIK surgery usually occurs very rapidly, as the eyes are one of the fastest repaired parts of the human body. After LASIK surgery, your eyes may be red and watery. These normal symptoms are just part of the healing process. However, you may feel the urge to rub your eyes, like they’re irritated. Resist rubbing your eyes, and use the eye drops given to you by your doctor. Your vision may be blurry and hazy for the first day, but most patients notice improved vision within a few days of surgery. Some patients even experience improved vision immediately after LASIK surgery.
Specific follow-up appointments after your LASIK surgery varies from one surgeon to another. Typically, you will revisit the doctor for an evaluation 24 to 48 hours after surgery, as well as at regular intervals within the first six months. Most patients can return to work the next day or within a few days. Slight discomfort, sensitivity to light and eye dryness are common healing affects after LASIK surgery. However, if you think you are having any issues, it is important to call your doctor to see if further care is required.

Be Proactive!
It’s easy to overlook eye care when you’re seeing well and have no irritation. However, even then, it is important to take care of your eyes! Oftentimes, when you wait until you notice a problem, it may be too late. Take a look at these easy ways to be proactive about your eye health!

Be proactive about your eye health!
- Visit your eye doctor-Get regular exams and make sure your eye doctor knows your accurate health history. Adults should have yearly eye exams and children should first see the eye doctor between the ages of 6 and 12 months. It’s important to detect visual problems early to avoid learning problems down the road.
- Replace Contact Case-If you wear contacts, be sure to replace your contact lens case every two to three months. This is a primary reason for complications. Often, contact cases are kept in humid bathrooms, which is a breeding ground for bacteria. Replace your case often and keep it in a clean , dry place. Take caution to entirely empty the case of all solution and thoroughly rinse and dry the case before putting it away.
- Caffeine Intake-Good news, two servings of caffeine a day can protect against dry eyes. However, more than 2 servings can deplete your tear film and dry out your eyes, leading to irritation. So, consume caffeine, but not too much!
- 20-20-20-Most people work in front of a computer all day. It is important to give your eyes a break! Remember the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This breaks the eyes’ constant strain and helps refresh eyes by increased blinking. When using a computer, try to stay an arm’s distance away to avoid eye strain and dry eyes.
- Eat Your Veggies-Eating healthy foods isn’t JUST good for your health, it’s good for your eyes too! Don’t discount the power of fruits and veggies in regards to eye health. Dark leafy greens are rich in lutein, which protects against macular degeneration. Foods rich in omega-3s, such as fish and walnuts have been known to reduce inflammation in the blood vessels of the eye.

Can You Prevent The Decline Of Vision?
With aging bodies, come aging eyes. What can you do to prevent the decline of vision? Surprisingly, proper eye care for people over 50 (screening, diagnosis and treatment) can help to delay and even prevent vision decline.
Over half of baby boomers will develop an age-related eye disease. However, a recent study suggests more people are interested losing extra weight or eliminating back pain. Unfortunately, people don’t realize what’s at stake when it comes to their vision, assuming vision decline is something that is inevitable and expected. It doesn’t have to be! Appropriate Eye care for people over 50 can prevent the “inevitable” affects aging has on the eye.
Of course, aging and the affect it has on eyes is dependent on various factors (lifestyle, exposure, genetics). However, there are things you can do to reduce this affect.
Reduce The Effects Of Aging
- First, listen to your body. If something seems wrong or if you begin to question your vision, talk to a doctor. Always follow your instinct if something seems amiss.
- Have a baseline eye exam at age 40 to assess your eye health and receive personalized eye care tips, based on family history and lifestyle. After that, you should visit your eye doctor for a check up at least once a year, perhaps more often if recommended by your doctor.
- If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of eye diseases, you should visit your eye care provider more regularly. There are probably drops or other medication you should be taking. Be sure to remain consistent and diligent with these medications, to treat and prevent any eye diseases that would lead to vision decline.
- Always wear some type of eye protection when going outside. Wearing special UV protection sunglasses and contacts protect the eyes more directly by blocking the effects of damaging rays, while a hat can help to shade your eyes. Avoid sun exposure between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm, as those are the most dangerous.
- There are so many links to good eye health and proper nutrition. Make healthy choices, with a diet hight in antioxidants from fruits and vegetables, to prevent the decline of vision. Ask your doctor which eye care supplement may be right for you. There may be a specific vitamin to promote eye care for people over 50, which should sometimes be recommended on a individual basis.

Which Pair Is Right For You?
Choosing glasses can be a difficult task, given the wide variety of styles and options. Which pair is right for you? Some frames can compliment your face, if you choose the right ones. Let’s look into which glasses are best for your face shape!
Round face-Strong, angular shaped frames are best for round faces. The lens width should be wider than the depth. Frames with upswept corners also look good on people with round faces.
Oval face-A variety of frames can work with an oval face shape. Square and rectangular frames compliment an oval face, because of the line contrast. When choosing frames for an oval face, keep in mind the scale of the frame. A frame that is too large or too small can throw off the natural balance of the face.

Change your look by choosing a frame that accentuates your face shape!
Square face-For a square face, find frames with architectural features, such as browline emphasis or color. Oval and round shaped frames are a good option for square faces, given that they contrast the lines of a square face. Rectangular frames should have softer edges.
Heart face-With a heart shaped face, the key is to find frames to balance the varying width. With a high cheekbone, heart faces can pull off round lenses and a straight frame, not easily worn on other face types.
Rectangular face-With more length than width on a rectangular shaped face, choose frames with a bit of depth to balance the length of the face. Stay away from small, narrow lenses that exaggerate face length. The right frames will add width and break up length.
But The Best Kind…
As you can see, there are many different frame options for each face type. Choosing the right one can accentuate your style and transform your look entirely. However, the best kind of glasses is no glasses at all! At Eye LASIK Midland, we offer a new approach to laser vision correction, allowing patients to work with the primary eye doctor they’ve known for years. This means the patient’s optometrist performs all the work preceding the laser procedure, as well as all the follow-up visits. With Eye LASIK Midland, patients receive premium care from all the doctors they know and trust.
